Intercessory Prayer
“Intercessory prayer “in behalf of all and for all” is a deliberate and decisive act of those individuals who have been baptized into Christ and who present themselves before God in a spirit of love, compassion and confidence in God’s divine mercy for the sake of the other. It is the fervent prayer that we offer to God for the sake of all in this world, especially those within the community of the Church, both the living and those who have fallen asleep in Christ. Our practice of praying for those who have died is deeply rooted in the ecclesial consciousness of the faithful as the supreme act of love, for in Christ there is no death. It is the Lord Jesus Christ himself and the Holy Spirit of God who pray within us. — Christ is the intercessor and those who interiorize him intercede before God as he intercedes for us.” (Fr. “When Saint Paul directs us to pray for all men, he specifies both “supplications and intercessions” (2 Timothy 2:1); yet, note, there is no essential difference between these types of petitions, for both are “prayers,” and both are offered for others in need. Still, considering mankind’s physical, emotional, and spiritual requirements, the range of possible human problems is vast. Hence there is good reason to offer regular intercessions. “Paul asks the Colossians to pray for him. Specifically, he urges them to pray that God would open a door for him to proclaim the Word of the mystery of Christ, even while he is imprisoned (Colossians 4:3). Yet consider: Paul is an Apostle with the divine calling to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles. Why would he have to ask the congregation at Colossae to pray for Him? Wouldn’t his prayers be sufficient? The answer is that when we add our prayers to the petitions of others, their power is magnified. Moreover, they are especially powerful when they are inspired by the mutual love of our brothers and sisters in Christ.” (Fr. Basil)

“Why do we ask people to pray for us? We do so because we believe the prayers of others, especially the prayers of people who seem to be holier than us, are effective. All throughout Scripture people pray for each other. We all need spiritual covering and protection from others. “It is often our custom that when we want to express something meaningful on the occasion for example, a person’s birthday, wedding anniversary, graduation, etc., we will often send them a greeting card and one that usually has a message, verse or poem in it. Couldn’t we have just used our own words and “gone directly” to that person? Yes, but the words of the card say it better. When we kiss a photo of a loved one, we are not worshiping the person but demonstrating in a concrete way our love for the person.
